What Car Battery Should You Choose? Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), Gel Or Wet Cell

An electrical problem that doesn't let your car start and leaves you stuck in a parking lot or some place away from the fix that's needed is an unwanted problem we all do our best to avoid. So what can you do to lessen the possibility of a possible unwanted situation that involves an electrical system crash in your vehicle?

First of all make sure you spend double the money on a good car battery. A lead acid battery can cost between $75 to $125 dollars. The only reason liquid lead acid batteries are the most commonplace is liquid lead acid batteries were first developed in 1859 and they are the least expensive in today's world of automotive engine starting sources. In 1971 the sealed liquid lead acid battery was created that made it maintenance friendly.

VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries include gel and absorbed glass mate which are not liquid. Gel batteries are as the name applies which is a "Gel". AGM batteries are silicate glass fibers mixed with boron and formed into a mat that holds the electrolyte. Non liquid gel batteries were created in the late 1920's and lead to the creation of the "Absorbed Glass Mat" batteries in 1957. The AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery was put into production in 1972 but mostly used for military applications and non vehicle applications like boats, motor homes, motorcycles and electronics. Nowadays you see more AGM batteries becoming available for use in production cars. AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries can cost from $160 to $250 but have more advantages over liquid lead acid batteries.

AGM batteries are basically used in applications where the use of the vehicle is only used now and again as in boats and recreational vehicles. The non use discharge rate is much lower in non use applications than liquid lead acid batteries. The charge rate is much faster also. Some automotive manufacturers are installing AGM batteries as their standard new car power source because of today's higher vehicle power consumption. BMW right now is known to be the first to install AGM batteries in their 2007 models because of computer functions and braking.

AGM batteries are much better than liquid lead acid batteries but the downside of AGM batteries is you don't overcharge them. They will charge faster with a normal output alternator up to 14.5 volts and a high output alternator is not needed. When an AGM battery is used in a non use vehicle a solar panel is recommended with a trickle charge. AGM batteries will go bad if charged over 14.5 volts. Most problems with charging AGM's are in sports vehicles due to the rough environment they are used in. Toss away your old plug in garage battery charger and get a new one that maintains "Voltage" instead of amps. An AGM battery charger will sense a very low voltage in the battery and will start the recharge whereas an old charger does not sense low voltage and will not charge the battery.

When you are buying a car, you are wasting your money if you don't talk down the sticker price. You should not buy a car for what it says on the window. They purposely inflate the value to dicker with you, and you need to remember this fact.

Look for your car on the Internet before going to the lot. Don't visit a dealership until you have a good idea of what you want in a vehicle, such as size, brand, and pricing. Research online before settling on any final decisions.

Don't buy without test driving. Even if you've already test driven this exact brand and model, you must know if it drives well. There might be some different things that you're not used to, or perhaps a defect that you weren't previously aware of.

When you're looking for a vehicle, think about how the fuel economy can affect you. For instance, you may want an automobile with a V-8 engine and the ability to tow. However, are they features that you will frequently need or use? If so, are they useful enough to offset the lower fuel economy?

A dealership is not the only place to buy a car. You might be surprised to find that the vehicle you want is readily available from a private owner or small lot. Check out the classified ads in your area for great deals on local cars.

Take advantage of online resources for car buyers. You can find a vast selection of cars for sale online. Get all the information you can regarding the vehicles you're thinking about purchasing before you visit the car lot. You can look on the Internet for information like MPG, specifications, resell value, size and ratings.

Car salesmen have quotas to meet. Use this to your advantage and shop for your car at month-end. Due to their quota, salesmen become a lot more friendly at the end of the month in most cases. This allows you a little bit more wiggle room in your price negotiations.

Do you feel more confident about your car purchasing now? You should, and the advice you have read should go a long way. You don't have to feel uneducated now and you will be able to better understand what dealerships tell you. You've got the knowledge to find the best deal.

Tips On How To Find A Great Repair Facility & Mechanic

What Are You Looking For?
The first thing you need to consider is how well you want your vehicle fixed and how reliable you want it to be. I know this may seem unnecessary but in this world there are a ton of different people who have different standards. The person with a $1,000 beater is not going to go to the same shop or dealer as the person with a $20,000 vehicle. So, before you determine what shop to go to and what mechanic you want working on your vehicle, think about what standards you want.

Start Big And Then Narrow Your Sights
The second thing you must do is try different shops around where you live. In the online world, you can check reviews or forums for other people's opinions but the simple fact is that you won't know until you try it. So, once you have decided what standard you have for your vehicle you should pick 3 or more different shops in your area (if there are that many) and take any issues you have with your vehicle to them. Instead of having it fixed at the first shop you try, go to 3 or more shops with the same concern and see what differs between each of them. Each one should have a certain inspection method to look your vehicle over. Find the one that fits your liking the best, and whatever one gives you the best explanation of your concern or issue with the vehicle.

The Most Important Factor
Now that you have an idea of how well they look over your vehicle and how well they can explain what your issues are you can narrow it down by price, personality, professionalism, certifications, or any other attribute that you deem the most important. The original 3 or more choices will more than likely be down to one or two at this point. The last and most important factor in singling it down to that one shop or mechanic can be simply asking the mechanic or manager what experience they have had in the past and where they want to go in the future. Some of the best mechanics or managers I've ever met believe in what they are doing as incredibly important and fascinating. These attributes will assur

Auto Repair Information For Those With And Without Knowledge

If you are a car owner, you need to know something about auto repairs. Still, most owners don't know anything about their vehicle. Fortunately, the article that follows below includes lots of terrific tips to help you make certain your car is always in good working order.

Look up reviews online for body shops in your area. This lets you know how other people who have tried this mechanic before have felt about their experience. This will help you choose the best shop.

Be careful that your mechanic does not attempt to perform unneeded repairs. A good mechanic will never perform work without getting your full approval. If a mechanic tries to charge you for unneeded repairs, find another mechanic.

Ask for parts that are classified as OEM parts. OEM parts are parts that are made by the manufacturer. Generic parts may cost less, but you cannot really tell if they are the best quality. Generic parts could end up costing you more in the long run.

If you plan to take your car to the shop, do not leave anything inside the car. The mechanic might need to clean out the car before performing repair work, and your personal items could be lost. Clear out your trunk, too.

Have you noticed that your headlights aren't shining very brightly? If so, ensure you are cleaning them regularly. Sometimes, dirt from the road transfers over to your lights dim them. You will be able to see well when using a reliable glass cleaner.

A spare tire and a jack are essential items to keep in your trunk. Modern cars come equipped with them already. This way you won't get stuck anywhere and need to pay someone to tow you. You do the job yourself with less time and expense.

Assemble an auto repair kit and put it inside of your trunk. You need to have tools to change a tire, which have come along with your car. A lug wrench and a jack are essential. A Philips head as well as flat head screwdriver should be helpful, plus socket and adjustable wrenches. Avoid cheap tools. Get good, sturdy tools that won't break when you need them the most.

With the privilege of driving, comes responsibility. Too many people do not understand what steps to take to have repairs performed on their cars. Utilize the concepts above to help your car keep running smoothly.
